In this video, Sam will go through some of the exclusive rewards both Uber and Lyft are offering. But like other things with Uber and Lyft, these rewards change all the time. So take this as examples of the types of things they offer. No doubt the offers they make today will be somewhat different.
How Do Perks and Rewards Work?
Perks and rewards are given based on drivers achieving certain milestones. The milestones are usually driving a certain number of trips each week. There is also a basic level where all drivers get a little something – even if they haven’t driven any trips that week. But those rewards are not very valuable at all.
Still, it’s nice to know these rewards exist in the first place. As a gig economy worker, you don’t get a company health insurance plan or 401(k). Therefore, what rewards and perks you can get are worth looking into.
Lyft’s Silver Rewards
To give you some examples, if you meet the requirements for Lyft’s lowest plan, their Silver plan, they have what they call “Hit the Road Essentials.” You can get discounts on:
- Fuel ($0.03 off per gallon)
- Health insurance
- Phone discounts
- Mileage tracking
- Roadside assistance
- Financial planning
The fuel discount of $0.03 per gallon is obviously not a big benefit, but remember, this is their lowest level, which they call “Silver Status.”
On the health insurance, Lyft is never clear about what the benefit is exactly. They say it gives you “Access to eHealth Marketplace.” But, anyone can have access to that simply by going to their website. eHealth Marketplace is a company that gives you access to the same health plans you can get on HealthCare.gov. So, it’s not altogether clear what the benefit is here.
Lyft says the benefit will let you “[c]ompare affordable health plans and get access to licensed insurance agents for additional support with eHealth Marketplace, the leading online marketplace for individual and family health insurance products in the nation.”
But they don’t say you get any kind of discount. And what eHealth does is give people a way to compare health plans and get access to licensed insurance agents.
It almost sounds like the benefit is they give you “access” to something you can then buy at the regular price. So, it’s just not clear here exactly what they’re giving drivers.
Uber has a similar program with Stride Health – which does the exact same thing. And Uber also does not clearly state any actual benefit to drivers other than giving them the URL for Stride’s website – which they can pretty easily find on their own anyway.
They do much better on the phone plans. In the video, Sam shows that at the time he made the video they were offering 20 percent off eligible plans and up to a $650 device credit when you switch to AT&T.
They also have deals with Verizon from time to time – in this case they had a deal offering 15 percent off on Verizon plans. And they also do deals with Sprint (of course, Sprint does deals with everybody because they’re trying to become relevant!).
They also have a cool thing with Betterment or Wealthfront. These are financial planning services which you should use because they’ll help you start saving.
Also on health care, they have a Silver reward for $25 off on all services with Doctor on Demand – which is a 33 percent discount on medical “visits.” Doctor on Demand is a really good service that allows you to consult with a doctor in minutes by video on your phone, tablet, or desktop computer. Doctor on Demand is open to everyone with or without insurance.
Another Silver reward is discounted towing and roadside assistance with Allstate Roadside Assistance.
Plus, they offer a discount on Quickbooks mileage tracking app. But check out Ridester’s research on the 10 Best Mileage Tracking Apps for 2018, because there are some better ones out there.
These are just some examples of Lyft’s Silver rewards. The rewards can change from week to week and month to month. They may also be different from city to city.
Uber’s program, while very similar to Lyft’s in many ways, is also different in that they tend to have more offers to help you with car-related expenses.
For instance, they can issue you a Visa debit card from GoBank, and if you reach a certain level you can use the debit card to buy gas from certain gas stations to get a small discount on the price. However, many drivers have found the stations you have to buy from in order to receive the discount are so much higher priced than other nearby stations that even with the discount, you’ll pay more than if you went a few doors down to another station.
Uber also has deals with AutoZone, Firestone, Jiffy Lube, and Maaco. So, they really help you more with car-related expenses. And if you drive a lot for them that can come in real handy.
Probably their best deal right now is with Firestone where you can buy tires for just 10 percent over store cost. That one could actually end up saving you some pretty decent money!
With AutoZone, the deal is 10 percent off goods purchased. And with Jiffy Lube, the discount is 15 percent off products and services. This is another one that could save you a lot of money over time, because full-time drivers find themselves getting oil changes sometimes once every month.
One of their best deals right now on oil changes, though, is with Sears Auto Center where they’re currently offering 50 percent off oil changes. You’ll also get 30 percent back on all labor charges at Sears Auto Centers.
They also have deals with Wheel Works, Tires Plus, The Ticket Clinic, Safelite AutoGlass, and Meineke. So Uber has your car needs very well covered in their Perks program.
If you need a brake repair, you can get it done at Meineke for 12 percent off.
And if you chip your windshield with a flying rock on the highway, which happens a lot more often than you think, especially if you’re driving 3,000 miles a month, you can get that taken care of at Safelite with a discount of $10 off glass repair or $25 off glass replacement. Safelite has even set up a special page for Uber drivers.
As Sam points out, not all of these discounts are that great. Some of them are, but not all. But we don’t get a lot of perks as drivers, so you really should use every single one you can to your utmost benefit!
In this video I want to show you show a really cool perk with Lyft and Uber, that’s Uber Rewards and Lyft Perks. Now, this video is really cool for me because this is something that I forget about often and I’m missing out in a lot of benefits.
And so, here are some of the cool things that you can get. So being an Uber or a Lyft driver you can have access to lots of different rewards. However, they’re not for everyone.
There are certain milestones you have to reach. So, let me just show you Lyft just to give you an example. So these are their accelerate premiere driver rewards. So, if you do just 0 to 19 rides, you get silver, which means you get Hit the Road Essentials.
These are the Hit Roads Essentials. Let’s make it bigger for you to see, so you can as you can read you get different benefits. You get fuel rewards, 3 cents a gallon, not very good. Different things, help with the honest dollar, which is, you know, kind of like an investment plan.
Health insurance, which is this is important. These things are important because as an independent contractor, these are things that they do not take care of and you get small savings on a Verizon bill.
Now, if you drive 20 to 199 rides, which is going to be probably most of us here, we’re going to be in this range. Some of us are gonna be in the platinum range. You can get the Extra Mile Perks.
Now, these are a little better, 5 cents, 20 percent off. This is pretty cool 30 percent if you’re a big movie buff, and then save up to 50 percent off hotels and travel. Don’t ever forget up. Up is a keyword in a lot of things. And if you’re platinum you get 7 cents a gallon and then free roadside insurance.
However, every week you’re going to get an email from Lyft and depending on your different level, you get certain perks, and they will highlight special things.
Hotels.com. Lyft drivers save up to 50 percent on hotels. That’s really cool. So you check these out and bookmark different things. They have different things that you can save 5 percent on tuition. No thanks.
And there are different things you can do, kid’s bikes, gym memberships. I mean lots of different things, Ray-Bans. I mean you name it they have a lot of different things.
Lyft is pretty broad and you can see a lot of things. So here are some more things Dell, Hook Ups. I mean just on and on. There’s a lot of different little things you can look at. Hey, 12 percent off. Nope, not very good.
But anyway, so you shop around. You’re smart. Some of these deals aren’t that very good, very good but some of them are very good, so check that out.
Now, here is one more thing. Here is kind of like The Hub, where you can look at all your different benefits. So, check this out. You can go to Automotive and look at the specific category.
And now, look you can look at Goodyear Tires and on and on. You could look at different things that you can get. So really, really helpful thing, but it obviously, honestly, for me because they’re so many categories, so many things it’s kind of overwhelming that I don’t even want to look at it, but that’s my fault.
I need to look at more financial on this. They’ve got to deal with multiple different things where you can get loans for house and so, take advantage of this. Really, really good things. Spend, you know, a couple of hours just set apart where you can look at all these different perks.
Let’s look at some of the Uber rewards. Uber is the same situation where there are limitations, so, they don’t have exactly silver, gold, and platinum.
But there are certain things that a lot of other rewards. Since so fuel cards are going to be a really cool one. Let me show you this one.
I’m not driving Uber a lot lately, so if you drive enough you’ll get this fuel card which is kind of like a debit gift card and you can get up to 15 cents off per gallon.
Now, what I do is I just go to…I have a 2 percent cash bank card and then, I also go to Costco. And so, Costco is way cheaper and then 2 percent, so that works out well for me. And I have a Prius, so I don’t fill up much.
Here are some other cool things. They have a really killer phone plan. So you get 20 percent off of eligible plans and up to $650 device credits when you switch to AT&T. That’s really, really good.
Verizon is 15 percent and then you get a deal with Sprint. Sprint always has deals for everyone because they’re trying to become relevant again. So, you don’t even need them for that.
They have a cool thing with Betterment or Wealthfront. And so, if you want to start saving, which you should, Betterment is a really, really good thing that I personally use.
And so, you can get a year free which is not really a big deal because a year free is very, very little. But anyway, it’s a good way to connect.
So, they have a couple other things. When they say save on childcare that is not babysitting. Parents, I’ve checked. It is 25 percent off honest.com which includes diapers.
So, they have a couple of rewards that are not as good. So again, please check these out. There are a lot of great gems here. There’s a lot of things that are not very helpful, but hopefully, this is a good introduction to rewards and perks.
Please, utilize them. We don’t get a lot of perks as drivers and use every single one that we can to our utmost benefit. Alright, hope this is helpful.
