Isn’t technology amazing? Just think of all the cool things we get to do and how technology helps us in so many ways. At this point, it seems like we couldn’t live without it.

But with our dependency on technology, when things go wrong, we tend to freak out.

If you’ve ever experienced issues with your phone, your laptop, or even an app, you know exactly how frustrating it can be.

And we’ve all experienced issues at some point. But when you drive for a rideshare service like Uber and Lyft, you need technology to be able to do your job.

Sometimes there are GPS issues, which result in confused drivers and annoyed riders. We’ve also heard drivers complain that the apps have glitches or other technical issues. (That’s common when you’ve done a recent software update on your phone).

But regardless of the issue, it all results in the same thing – you not being able to do your job properly and by default, you losing money. Uber & Lyft both have been great about increasing the UX of their apps, but occasional issues are inevitable.

If you find yourself in a situation where your app isn’t working or isn’t responding the way it should be, there are some things you can do to fix it.

Read and bookmark this page for future help because we’re breaking down five ways you can solve the most common app issues yourself.

Uber drivers and Lyft drivers, get ready to learn a few things that will make it easier (and less frustrating) to do your job

Restart the App

It almost goes without saying that a simple restart of an app or device can solve a lot of issues. If your Uber app or Lyft app isn’t functioning the way it should, close it. Don’t just let it run in the background – close it completely.

Open it back up and once it’s restarted, try doing whatever it is you need to do again. When closing and restarting the app doesn’t work, it’s time to go a step further.

Close all the apps on your phone and turn your phone off altogether. Give it a minute or so and turn your phone back on. Issues are often resolved with a simple restart of the device. Most common problems are global issues that a reboot can fix.

If you find that restarting your phone resolves your problem, think about how many times you’ve experienced glitches in the past. If it’s one glitch here or there, no problem.

But if you’re experiencing a lot of glitches or frequent freezing, you might want to turn off your phone and restart it at the beginning of every shift.

There’s nothing worse than GPS issues or losing access to the driver app when you’re mid-ride. Turning your phone off at the beginning of a shift and restarting it before you pick up a passenger might be all you need to do to enjoy an error-free day.

Uninstall/Reinstall the App

A restart of the app or a reboot of your mobile device should be able to resolve the most common issues. But when that doesn’t work, there’s one extra step you can take.

If you’re having serious issues that simple restarts don’t fix, it might be time to delete the driver app completely and then reinstall it on your phone. Deleting and re-downloading the app may take a bit of time – we get it – but sometimes it’s worth doing.

With an app that doesn’t work, you won’t be able to make any money driving. It’s better to spend the time deleting and reinstalling it.

Yes, it’s time-consuming, but it’s worth it if it gets you back out on the road in an hour or later that day. Uber, Lyft, and other apps are updated all the time, so make sure your phone’s software is compatible with the app’s most recent updates.

Don’t Update Your Phone Right Away

When iOS and Android send out updates, don’t rush to update your phone. New updates can include all sorts of new features that make people excited to download them immediately, but it’s best to be patient.

New updates often include software bugs and cause issues that can affect the way your apps run. Wait a few days and let other users run the update first.

Let Apple and Android get the feedback from other unhappy users who have run the new update only to experience new issues. They’ll work out the kinks (they always do), so give it a week or at least a few days for any internal problems to be solved.

Just because a new software update comes out doesn’t mean your current software will be obsolete – that’s hardly the case at all. Running a new update the day it becomes available is never a good idea.

Other users will inevitably install the new software immediately, so let them be the guinea pigs. In the meantime, you can sit back, continue to do your job, and wait for the bugs to get worked out.

Everyone wants to be the person with the newest phone and the best software. But those are the people who usually experience the most issues.

New is great, but it isn’t always better. If new means you can’t do your job as an Uber driver or a Lyft driver, you won’t be able to make any money until the issues get resolved.

To see what version of your phone’s software is running, here’s what to do:

  • For iPhone users: Go to Settings, click General, tap About, click Version
  • For Android device users: Go to Home, select Menu, click Settings, tap on About Phone, click Software Information

Confirming that your phone is compatible with the latest version of the app won’t solve any issues per say, but it will help you eliminate possible causes of concern if you are experiencing frequent problems.

Declutter Your Phone

There are a lot of things about your phone that impact how your apps perform. The age of your phone is a factor. When it was last updated can also be an issue, especially if your current software isn’t compatible with the newest version of the app.

How much storage you have left on your phone also comes into play. All of these things can slow down your phone and cause your apps to perform poorly – or not perform at all.

Take some time every once in a while to go through your apps. If you’re running low on storage, delete those old games you don’t play anymore and remove those silly apps you used once a year ago.

If you don’t use an app on a regular basis, you don’t need to have it on your phone. You can always download an app again if you find yourself missing it. Did you go through a shift where you were experiencing issues with your Uber driver app or Lyft driver app?

Take the time to delete other apps before you start your next shift. Not sure how much time you’re spending on each app? A recent iPhone update analyzes this for you and indicates how much time you spend on each app and how frequently you’re using it.

Delete any apps that you haven’t used in a while, especially the ones that take up a lot of space on your phone.

For Android phone users who want to see their app usage, you can download an app called Quality Time to do it for you.

It may seem counterintuitive to add a new app for the sole purpose of figuring out which apps you should delete, but it’s worth it if it helps you figure out what to delete.

Another way to maximize storage space on your phone is to save your photos and videos to the Cloud. You can also free up space by deleting old text messages or deleting photos and videos altogether.

Consider Getting a New Phone

We get attached to our phones and devices, but sometimes reality sets in and you can’t ignore it: it may be time to get a new phone.

If you’ve tried every method discussed above and still can’t get your Uber or Lyft app working again, a new phone may be your only option. In some cases, it is difficult for older phones to run new apps.

And as a rideshare driver, aside from your car, your phone is the most critical piece of equipment you have. You can’t drive without running the Uber or Lyft app. You can’t accept ride requests, you can’t pick up passengers, and you can’t make more money.

So if you have an old phone, you’ve got to make the investment and upgrade to a new one. You can’t run your business without it! Depending on your phone carrier, you might be eligible for an upgrade. Don’t run out and spend full price on a brand new phone.

Check with your carrier to see if you qualify for an upgrade or a discount. In some cases, you might not be able to get the newest model to hit the market, but you might be able to get a newer model for a great price.

For example, if you want to upgrade to an iPhone X, you may have to pay full price. But if you currently have an iPhone 7, you might be able to upgrade to an iPhone 8 for a lower price or a reasonable monthly rate.

If you don’t want to splurge for a new phone or add $20 or $30 a month to your cell phone bill, there’s always the option to buy a refurbished phone. They’re usually heavily discounted, and they function as well as you would expect any new phone to work.

When you drive for a rideshare service, your phone is your means of making money. You cannot do your job without one.

So it may be time to part ways with your old, trusted phone and make the switch to a new one. It may cost you some money now, but in the long run, it will be worth it because you’ll be able to make more money by having it.

Technology has made it possible for us to work in a gig economy and be our own bosses. It’s also allowed us to capture every moment of our lives through photos and videos and communicate in a variety of different ways. But when app issues arise – and then they do – it can be frustrating.

To make money as an Uber driver or Lyft driver, you need to have a functioning smartphone. You have to be able to access the apps – and you need those apps to work at high-functioning levels.

If you’re experiencing issues with your apps, there are a few things you can do.

First, try the simplest approach and restart the app. Close it out. Restart it. That often fixes the issue.

The second thing you can do is shut down and reset your phone. That simple move usually makes most problems disappear.

If those tricks don’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app. In most cases, the problems go away if you download a new version of the app. Resist the temptation to update your phone right away.

When new software updates come out, let other users try them first. Updates often include software bugs, but Apple and Android are quick to fix them. Hold off on those updates for a week or at least a few days.

That can prevent a problem from occurring in the first place. Declutter your phone by removing unused apps, moving photos and videos to the cloud, and deleting old text messages.

The more space you have available on your phone, the better your apps will run. When all else fails, it might be time to invest in a new phone. Older phones sometimes have trouble running current apps, so make sure you have a phone that can handle the latest technology.

Time is money, and no one knows that better than a rideshare driver. Take the time to do some troubleshooting and if you have to, get a new phone.

Without a working phone, there’s just no way you can do your job.
